Summer in Huntsville is always busy and full of more visitors than at any other time of year. This is our peak season for community events and recreational activities. This is also when downtown Huntsville is full to the brim with people, and their cars. To encourage less parking congestion and more exercise among residents and visitors alike, the Town of Huntsville is encouraging everyone to take the Healthy Huntsville Pledge.
While having a vehicle in our region makes getting around our scenic region easier, there are places such as downtown Huntsville where it’s more about convenience than need for most. Huntsville is also a town which supports healthy lifestyle choices throughout the community. Taking the Healthy Huntsville Pledge is not only a wonderful way to give your daily dose of exercise an extra boost, but it’s also a great way to connect with the community.
The pledge is simple, by completing the online form available on the Town’s website, you pledge to park your car a few blocks (or more), away from downtown Huntsville’s main street area. Parking is limited along Main Street, but we have plenty of other areas available. By parking a bit farther, you give yourself the opportunity to walk around town a bit more – the more we walk, the healthier we are. When walking you also might discover a shop, restaurant, gallery or park space in Huntsville which you wouldn’t notice by car.
To help facilitate those looking for alternative parking options near downtown Huntsville, all you need to do is access the Huntsville Summer Parking Map. To encourage everyone to participate, those who register will get a special sticker showing they have taken the pledge, and the opportunity to share photos of yourself and your family enjoying downtown Huntsville on foot.
From selfies of your walk to and from your car to group shots of community events and special finds discovered around downtown, photos can then be posted on either the Huntsville Facebook Page or to Twitter at #healthyhuntsville. Don’t worry if you don’t have one of these social media accounts, you can also upload your pictures via the Huntsville website.
There’s so much to do around the Town of Huntsville during the summer months, getting some extra exercise to encourage a healthy lifestyle is easy to do. Opting to park a bit farther away from Main Street is also a wonderful way to show community support as we all work together to make the summer season a carefree and fun time for everyone.
The Healthy Huntsville Pledge is just one way our community works together in a show of support and connection.
