The Muskoka region has a wide variety of recreational activities to enjoy year-round. Much of the draw to Ontario’s Cottage Country comes from the incredible ways you can spend time in the great outdoors, including during the winter. Even though our population is smaller during the cold season, many of us really do enjoy living here permanently. Winter recreation can often be best experienced in Arrowhead Provincial Park.

To be sure, you can go cross country skiing around Arrowhead Provincial Park, but there is much more waiting you in this winter wonderland. One of the most recent additions to the park are five winter cabins, set up with all your basic needs for cooking, including a grill for each unit. These cabins sleep up to 5 people in comfort, and are situated within close proximity to the recreational fun to be had.

If skiing isn’t your thing, or you are wanting to try something new, you can experience snowshoeing along many of the Park’s trails. For a thrilling good time, the tubing hill provides a fun and exciting trip down one of the Park’s camp roads, sliding downhill on a snow tube, catching speed and smiles all the way. Don’t worry about getting your own tube, these are provided at the Park.

The most amazing winter recreation activity in Arrowhead Provincial Park is ice skating. You may think, “What’s the big deal? There are plenty of places to ice skate around here.” It is true there are a variety of rinks, ponds and even small lakes where you can get out on the ice. However, at Arrowhead, you can skate along camp roads and trails, without worry of overcrowding, or the condition of ice on the water.

Ice skaters at the park can enjoy the natural, quiet beauty of the forest in winter as they skate along the 1.3-kilometer skate trail. This is a one-of-a-kind trail dedicated to ice skating. Sure, it’s roughly circular in shape, but it will take you some time to make a full circuit. Instead of simply going around and around in a small area, you can skate at your leisure under the trees blanketed with snow. You can race friends along the way, or use this recreational resource to keep yourself in shape during the winter months.

Add in lit tiki-torches for night skating, and you can experience the trails of Arrowhead Provincial Park in truly unique fashion. Here in Muskoka, we take Canadian pastimes such as ice skating seriously; what’s the use of all our snow and ice if we can’t enjoy it? The Park has taken a quintessential Canadian recreation up to a whole new level; this is one experience not to be missed!
